Tuesday Tax Tip
American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC): The AOTC is an education credit claimed on Form 8863. It is available for students enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university. The student must attend at least halftime for one academic period during the year and may be claimed for four years of post-secondary education. The credit is worth up to $2500 per eligible student and up to 40% (maximum $1000) of the credit may be refundable. (If taxpayer’s tax liability is zero, they may still get the refund.)
